Ethics and deontology in education

During the last decade, the high level of school attendance at the primary, secondary and university levels was affected by the effects of the economic crisis and of the social and the political upheavals connected with the difficult democratic transition. The education system considered as one of the best in the region, rapidly entered into an advanced state of decay, thus frustrating those for whom it had hitherto been a source of pride. The living and working conditions of teachers who are the main actors and agents of education, deteriorated considerably.

Favouritism, tribalism, corruption, lack of patriotism, demoralisation, demobilisation, demobilisation, indifference and all forms of discrimination reached unprecedented proportion and affected both of school and the society owing to a lack of education.

These ills may however be stamped out through improvement of the quality of the educator and of education. The signal the pressing need for a return to acceptable value and thus for ethics and deontology in education.

The teacher cum educator is the pivot of the education system and his rehabilitation is to be achieved through vocational development, duty consciousness and enrichment of both general and professional knowledge. This requires an improvement of the quality of the educators as well as their working relations with partners. It requires on the one hand, the respect of their right by all, and on the other hand, the performance of their duties by themselves. Finally, it is to be achieved through neutrality and a careful private life. But the improvement of the teachers’ conditioning every aspect and at all levels must be at the forefront af all priorities.

Ethics and deontology in education falls within the scope of the science of education it is primarily addressed to teachers, educators, professionals of the education system, parents and politicians. It is also addressed to all those who are concerned with the teachers’ condition, issues relating to the quality of education and the training of men.
